You don’t need to be lying down to unclench your hands, relax your arms from the shoulders and drop your shoulders themselves. Most of us hunch our shoulders and curve our spines when sitting down. Once you’ve dropped your shoulders out of the hunched position, you’ll find you need to straighten and adjust your spine. One way to help yourself is to sit in a really comfortable chair that supports your spine. Even in places where you haven’t any choice of chair you can get into the habit of letting the back of the chair take as much strain as possible. Experiment until you’ve found the most comfortable position for your back, sitting with your feet planted firmly on the floor and slightly apart.

By now you should be used to concentrating on one part of your body at a time. You may find that you already have such control over your muscles that you can relax them without tensing them up first; or you may still need to go through the routine of tightening, blowing out those candles and letting go. It’s possible to relax the muscles in your chest and your belly even though your spine is still fairly tense, as it has to be because it’s holding you up. If there is some particular reason why you must hold your tummy in as flat as possible all the time—if you’re a model, for instance — then you have to choose between comfort and appearance. And if your job depends on your appearance, then you haven’t really much choice.

It’s difficult to be decent and relax your legs and thighs, unless you’re fortunate enough to be wearing jeans or trousers. And as there are still far too many employers and headmasters and headmistresses who ban such sensible clothing, you may have to cope wearing a skirt. But it is possible to relax your feet, knees and lower legs even while you keep your thighs more or less together. Of course if you can relax your thighs, it’s a great deal easier to relax your belly and pelvic floor too.

In public places it isn’t possible to relax all the muscles in your face. If you did, you would alarm the people around you. But you can smooth out a scowl, stop gritting your teeth, feel your flesh hanging more smoothly from your cheek bones and even close your eyes for a few seconds. All these things will ensure you’re not wasting your energy using muscles unnecessarily.
