BEAUTIFUL HAIR – THE STRUCTURE OF THE HAIR
The anatomic structure of the hair, like so many other things in the body, is a technical miracle. Although the hair has no feeling, it is not dead matter either. Perhaps it could best be compared to a plant with a bulb-shaped root. The hair root, or bulb, is embedded in the skin, about 3-5 mm deep (Vs-Vs inch), and is connected by blood vessels from which it receives the nutrients necessary for the hair to grow. The daily rate of growth is about Va—Vi mm. A tightly knit network of lymphatics envelops the hair roots. The salty lymph is thought to act as an electrolyte in the electrical function of hair. Strong electric charges in hair cause visible sparks when combing it in the dark. The hair of very excited or ecstatic people lights up in the dark and when photographed the effect is seen as a kind of halo. Great mental disturbance and agitation is observable in the hair, when viewed under a microscope, as notches of variable depths. So it is possible, for example, to discover if someone has had a nervous breakdown the previous year.
