VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins affect men and women equally.
You have to rest your legs, above your heart, by lying down and putting a pillow under your ankles, twice a day for about 20 minutes if possible. It is important not to wear clothes that are too tight, especially underclothing. This can cut off the circulation and cause a build-up of pressure in the veins, leading to breakdown in the valves which can result in varicose veins. Constipation and pregnancy can also restrict blood flow to the legs. It is therefore important to eat a well-balanced diet high in fibre and drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. This will help eliminate problems such as constipation.
Include vitamin E in your diet. Eat foods that contain vitamin E, such as whole wheat, grains and cold pressed vegetable oils. The wheat germ is very rich in vitamin E and will increase oxygen to the area by improving circulation. Bioflavonoids and vitamin C can be of benefit. The combination of these two nutrients prevent capillary fragility and star-like veins that may appear. Fish oil containing omega 3 fatty acids will thin the blood and also help relieve pain associated with inflammation.
Keep your weight down. Overweight increases the load on the vascular system and can worsen the problem.
