HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD HAS ALLERGIES?
The basic approach for working out what your child might be allergic or sensitive to is little different from that required for adults. To do this properly, you need to understand what allergy, intolerance and sensitivity are, the likely symptoms, and the methods of detection, including medical tests
You should always consult a doctor if you suspect allergy or sensitivity in a child.
The particular difficulties of dealing with children lie in the fact that it is sometimes hard for a child to identify any symptoms or changes they experience, and to articulate them. It is often up to the person caring for the child to learn to spot the signs of reactions, and to interpret the child’s behaviour. In addition, it can be very difficult to get the child to co-operate in elimination and testing, particularly with special diets. This often requires a degree of subtlety and deviousness on the part of the carer to test things properly.
Where a child’s symptoms are obvious, and particularly if they are those of true allergy – asthma, eczema, rhinitis, urticaria, etc.
There is little doubt about diagnosis. Some children with allergy and sensitivity have lower-level and more diffuse symptoms, and these are often overlooked by both carers and doctors, especially when- they manifest themselves in behavioural symptoms. Symptoms of this kind most commonly accompany food intolerance and chemical sensitivity.
