BURNS

There are two types of burns. Deep-thickness burns which affect the whole skin and deeper tissue and the skin may look black and charred or white. As the nerve endings are often damaged there may be no pain. Superficial burns occur on the surface layers of the skin. They are usually red and may have blisters. Burns can be caused by steam, boiling water, fire, chemicals, sun and friction. As burns can lead to serious infection you need to see your doctor.

Immediately after a burn pour cold water on the burn, or apply an ice pack. This will help stop the burn from spreading, and reduce the pain. (Running water is best and should be run over the burnt area for at least 10 minutes.)

If the burn is not serious it still can be painful and left untreated, can lead to infection and scarring. You need to heal burns quickly. There are many things that can be done to hasten the healing process.

The herb Aloe vera is of great benefit for treating burns. The plant can be peeled back and the gel taken and rubbed on the burn. This will really speed up healing and help relieve the pain. Aloe vera gel can be bought from a health food store or pharmacy.

As new skin forms following a burn, there is a need for extra Vitamin C and zinc in the diet. Vitamin C forms the cement or the collagen of skin. These and Aloe vera gel will heal the burn very quickly. Vitamin E, taken as a supplement and applied to the area after the initial treatment will help prevent scarring.

If a burn is full-thickness or covering a large area of the body it may require emergency medical treatment. In this case only use cold water on the burn before seeking treatment, and cover the area with a sterile burns’ dressing.
